Steele Indian School Park
Hernandez Companies were chosen as the Construction Services Provider for extensive renovations to the historic Steele Indian School Park in Central Phoenix. Our professionals were responsible for the painting and finishing of exterior surfaces, along with upgrades and renovations to the plumbing systems throughout this entire site. The specialists from our Carpentry and Millwork Division undertook demanding and rigorous projects, utilizing highly specialized materials and techniques, to repair and preserve historic wooden features throughout the property.
Central High School
Constructed in 1957, Central High School was showing the signs of wear-and-tear that go along with hosting almost three generations of “Bobcats.” Hernandez Companies provided a team of specialized tradesman for a range of projects at this site. The professionals from our Paint and Finish Division prepared and painted all exterior metal surfaces on school grounds, and completed an extensive cosmetic update of the property that included drywall repairs, surfacing and interior paint work. At the same time our Electrical Division installed money-saving energy efficient fixtures on the property. And, although the students might not have liked it, Hernandez Companies adopted a modified work schedule to ensure that lessons were not disrupted, and that the specialized lift and access equipment required for this project were able to move safely around the site.
As you now know, Hernandez completed custom metal finishing at the visitors’ centers of three of Maricopa County’s popular regional parks. Should you consider the same for your commercial or residential structure?
Using traditional materials is tempting. Those long-gone Native American ancestors of the Valley were onto something with adobe bricks and building materials that have a heavy thermal mass: They kept things cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. But unlike our forebears, you can keep your structure from looking like a mud hut by adding some classy metalwork and unique paneling.
Metal is a beneficial building material because of the region’s low humidity and lack of a nearby ocean (also a drawback), making the issue of rust almost non-existent. Metal is also extremely durable – unlike exterior wood, you won’t have to paint a million and one coats of protective stain onto it to ward off the sun and heat. And if installed correctly with a creative touch, metal can add an artistic flair to your structure.
The combination of summer heat and Arizona’s monsoon storms takes its toll on exterior paint, metalwork, roofing, storm drains and more. And that doesn’t include the normal wear and tear on a building’s plumbing and electrical systems, interior walls, carpentry and metal fixtures.
If you add everything up, some structures are showing more miles than your old Aunt Millie. But don’t let your building creak and groan through the next year. Call the Building Whisperers.

Estrella Mountain Regional Park near Goodyear was one of the first public parks created by Maricopa County. Dating all the way back to 1954, it remains one of the region’s largest recreation sites, offering everything from baseball, biking and camping to golfing, hiking and horseback riding. Kind of makes sense that it needs a killer gathering spot, right?
The visitors’ center at Estrella is one of three popular, high-profile regional parks where Hernandez has shown its expertise in Construction Services and Facilities Management. Our skilled tradesmen completed all plumbing and painting work from the ground up, including a unique finish on the exterior metal panels to really make the place pop.
Estrella has come a long way with these new additions. Originally part of Mexico, the area – known as the Sierra Estrella mountain range – became part of the U.S. with the Gadsden Purchase in 1853. Today, it includes almost 20,000 acres of pristine desert, recreational trails and facilities.
Hernandez also applied its expertise to the visitors’ centers at Maricopa County’s Usery Mountain Regional Park in northeast Mesa and Cave Creek Regional Park off Carefree Highway north of Phoenix. The former comprises about 3,600 acres and includes breathtaking vistas, a stunning variety of plant life and a wind cave, while the latter comprises almost 3,000 acres of jasper-studded hills and the feeling of being back in the claim jumpin’ days of the gold miners.
